2024 Wuhan University Admissions Guide for International Applicants
(Master’s and Doctoral Degrees)
1) Applicants shall be non-Chinese citizens and meet the requirements stipulated in the JWH  No. 12 Document issued by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Applicants shall be physically and mentally healthy and willing to abide by the laws and regulations of China and the regulations of Wuhan University.
2) Applicants for a master's degrees should have a bachelor's degree or equivalent and be generally no older than 35 years of age. Applicants for a doctoral degree should have a master’s degree or equivalent and be generally no older than 40 years of age.
3) Language Ability
Applicants for Chinese-taught programs shall hold the new HSK level 4 certificate (with scores of 180+). Applicants whose mother tongue is Chinese or who have been taught in Chinese in high school can be exempted from a HSK certificate if approved by Wuhan University.
Applicants for English-taught programs shall hold a TOEFL 80+, TOEFL Essential 8+ or IELTS 6.0+ certificate. Applicants whose mother tongue is English or who have previous degrees taught through the medium of English can be exempted from TOEFL, TOEFL Essential and IELTS if approved by Wuhan University.

4) Identity Verification of Ethnic Chinese
If one or both of the applicant’s parents are Chinese, or the applicant has emigrated from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan and acquired foreign nationality, according to the No. 12 Announcement of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China (2020), they shall be naturalized for four years or more (before Apr. 30, 2024) and have more than two years of residence in foreign countries during this period (actual residence in a foreign country of more than nine months in a year can be calculated as one year, subject to the entry and exit stamps).
Applicants born in a foreign country are required to meet the above criteria and provide a personal birth certificate and the parents' nationality certificates.
1) Online Application
lComplete the application form and upload the required documents.
lScholarship applicants also need to complete the online application through the corresponding website at the same time. See "Attachment IV Scholarships Application Information" for details.
2) Application Documents Submission
lCopy of the passport biographical page（be valid at least till December 2024） and copy of the visa issued by a Chinese embassy (if available)
Master’s degree applicants should submit a bachelor’s degree certificate. Doctoral degree applicants should submit both master’s and bachelor’s degree certificates. Those who have not graduated yet must provide proof of impending graduation (in Chinese or English).
lMaster’s degree applicants should submit an academic transcript of their undergraduate studies. Doctoral degree applicants should submit academic transcripts of both graduate and undergraduate studies.
lMaster’s degree applicants should submit two academic recommendation letters from associate professors/professors in related academic fields. Recommendation letters from two professors/senior professionals in related academic fields are required for doctoral degree applicants.
lA personal statement and a brief research plan (minimum 1000 words). In addition, Doctoral degree applicants must submit a brief overview of their research experiences.
lHSK certificate (Chinese-taught programs only)
lEnglish language proficiency certificate, e.g., TOEFL/TOEFL Essential/IELTS/others. (English-taught programs only)
lApplicants with prior learning experiences in China should provide evidence of their academic performance from their previous institutions.
lFinancial certification/bank statement (minimum US$ 5,000)
lAn application fee of RMB 800/US$111 shall be paid within seven days through http://admission.whu.edu.cn for online payment (non-refundable).
lPhysical examination report issued within six months (the original report must be submitted upon registration).
Note: Applicants are required to submit scanned copies of all required documents during application. All uploaded documents must be in Chinese or English; otherwise, notarized translations in Chinese or English are required. The original documents and notarized translations must be submitted upon registration.
3) Interview & Examination
Applicants who pass the application documentation review will proceed to the interview and entrance exam stage. The time and mode of the interview and exam will be advised via email. Outstanding applicants recognized by Wuhan University will be exempted from the interview.
Application，Admission & Registration Period for Applicants
1) Application Period for Self-funded Applicants
The application period of non-degree programs for the spring semester runs from Oct. 20, 2023, to Dec. 30, 2023.
The application period for the autumn semester runs from Dec. 1, 2023, to Jun 15, 2024.
The application period of non-degree programs for the following spring semester runs from October 2024 to December 2024.
2) Admission Period for Self-funded Applicants
Based on an overall evaluation of the documentation and interviews of the applicants, Wuhan University will issue the admission results in batches. Please check the admission result on the website at http://admission.whu.edu.cn.
3) Registration Period
The usual registration period for international students is from August to September. Please check the Admission Notice for the exact registration time.
When registering at Wuhan University, admitted students must bring their ordinary passport (diplomatic and service passports will not be accepted), Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202/JW201) and student visa. Original or notarized diplomas or transcripts of their previous studies (in English or Chinese) must also be provided for review during the official registration. Otherwise, the admission will be considered invalid.
4) Application and Admission Information for Scholarship Applicants
For information on the application process and admission of scholarship applicants, please check “Attachment IV: Scholarships Application Information”.
Admitted applicants must bring their passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form (JW202/201), Physical Examination Record Form, as well as all physical examination reports, including the Blood Test Record, to the local Chinese Embassy/Consulate or other official agencies authorized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China to apply for a student visa (X1/X2 visa).
Note: If admitted applicants hold visas other than a student visa (X1/X2 visa), they will not be registered at Wuhan University.
Under special circumstances, students who are already in China can study at Wuhan University with their current visa.
The School of International Education will arrange on-campus accommodation for new students who register within the specified period.
Study Duration and Degree Award
The duration of master’s degrees at Wuhan University is two to three years. The duration of doctoral degrees at Wuhan University is three to four years. Most of the programs are taught in Chinese and a few in English. On successful completion of all course work and the passing of thesis defense, students will be awarded a graduation certificate and a degree.
