I. Educational Aims
College of Chemistry and Molecular Sciences at Wuhan University offers a PhD program in chemistry spanning diverse subdisciplines of chemistry with active cross-disciplinary research, and supports students’ scholarly and professional development in Chemistry and cross-disciplines.
The PhD program is designed to prepare candidates for a rewarding academic career through enabling students to carry on innovative research independently and empowering them to make valuable contributions to society with scientific excellence.

Doctoral students are expected to complete their studies and earn their degrees in 3 to 6 years; otherwise, they will be disqualified from the program after 6 years.
VI. Course Requirements
Doctoral students should complete no less than 12 credits. The courses offered are detailed below.
V. Other Compulsory Subjects and Requirements
Compulsory subject | Requirement |
Comprehensive examination | The comprehensive examination shall be completed as detailed in “Regulations for Academic Doctoral Training Program at Wuhan University”. |
Academic communication | Doctoral students should attend at least 6 academic lectures hosted at Wuhan University and participate in discussion after the lectures. The students should attend at least one international or national conference and give an oral or a poster presentation. Besides,the students has to present the research progress for evaluation by faculty members from the corresponding subdiscipline every semester. |
Literature study | To be well-informed scholars with expertise and knowledge in a particular field, PhD students should carry out comprehensive literature study, which will be evaluated in the form of Semester Research Progress Report and Comprehensive Examination. |
Teaching and research activities | Doctoral students are encouraged to undertake teaching activities such as to work as a teaching assistant, and to participate in research projects as a research assistant. |
Journal publication | Publications in peer-reviewed journals are required to apply for a PhD degree as detailed in “Regulations for publication requirements for PhD degree at Wuhan University”. |
VI. Dissertation
The PhD degree in Chemistry is given for making an original and significant contribution to chemistry and cross-disciplines as evidenced by a PhD thesis with an oral defense as detailed in “Regulations for Academic Doctoral Training Program at Wuhan University”.
