Application Guide for Chinese Government Scholarship-Bilateral Program

Bilateral Program accords with the cooperation and exchange agreements or consensus reached by the Chinese government and the governments and institutions of other nations. It is open to undergraduates, postgraduates, general and senior scholars.

An applicant shall file an application with the dispatching department of their home countries.

ⅠFunding Category, Duration and Teaching Language

2. The duration of scholarship is definite, including major studies and Chinese study period. In principal, it cannot be extended.1. Undergraduate scholarship students must register for Chinese-taught credit courses. Graduate and non-degree scholarship students can register for either Chinese-taught programs or English-taught programs if applicable. Some of the majors can be taught in English in Wuhan University. III Where and When to Apply 

Where to Apply

Apply to the dispatching authorities for overseas study of your home country （usually the local Chinese Embassy or Consulate-general). 

When to Apply

Usually you need to apply between early December and the end of March next year. Please consult the dispatching authorities for the specific deadline of each year.

IV   Eligibility

1. Applicants must be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health both mentally and physically.

2. The requirements for applicants’ degree and age are that applicants must:

● be an academically excellent holder of high school diploma or its equivalent under the age of 25 when applying for an undergraduate program;

● be an academically excellent holder of a Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent under the age of 35 when applying for a Master’s program;

 ● be an academically excellent holder of a Master’s degree or its equivalent under the age of 40 when applying for a doctoral program;

● be a holder of a high school diploma (or higher) under the age of 45 when applying for a general scholar program;

● be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above) under the age of 50 when applying for a senior scholar program.

3.   Language requirement

Applicants for Chinese-taught programs must provide a valid Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) certificate. Undergraduate or non-degree (general scholar & senior scholar) candidates should have achieved HSK Level III or above; Postgraduate candidates should have achieved HSK Level IV or above;

Applicants for English-taught programs should provide valid English Proficiency Test (IELTS or TOFEL) certificates;

Ⅴ Procedure of Application

1. An applicant shall learn about designated Chinese universities and majors they offer by visiting websites (http://www.campuschina.org) or other means, and identify the preferred scholarship program, designated university and major;

2. An applicant shall reach Wuhan University for pre-admission document. For the  application of the Pre-admission Letter of Wuhan University, please visit http://admission.whu.edu.cn/en/?c=content&a=list&catid=185;

3. An applicant shall reach an application receiving agency for a recommendation, and consult for the information of agency no. as well as the Instructions for Chinese Government Scholarship Information System;

4. An applicant shall fill in and submit the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship online via the Chinese Government Scholarship Information System (http://www.campuschina.org), after completing the online application, please download and print a hard copy of the “Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship”;

5. The application receiving agency shall submit the recommended candidates list and their application documents;

6. The CSC will organize designated universities and experts concerned to examine applicants’ eligibility and academic performance before finalizing the short-list candidates;

7. The CSC will notify the admission results to the application receiving agency that will subsequently have the applicant informed.

Ⅵ Application Documents 

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship(filled in online in Chinese or English)；

2. A scanned copy of the Passport Information Page: Applicant shall submit a clear scanned copy of his/her ordinary passport with validity later than March 1, 2025. Renew the passport if the requirement is not met. An applicant who fails to apply for a passport due to objective reasons may submit valid documentation or documentary evidence that carries information about the full English name, sex, nationality and date of birth of the applicant upon the approval of the application receiving agency;

3. Diploma and certificate of highest education (notarized photocopy). An applicant who is a current student shall submit the certificate of expected graduation and a student performance certificate issued by his/her school;  Document in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations;

4. Academic transcripts: Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English should be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations;

5. Certificate of language proficiency

● Applying for Chinese-taught programs

have acquired the Chinese proficiency of HSK Level 3 when applying for an undergraduate program, a general scholar program((excluding Chinese language majors) and  a senior scholar program.  Applicants who have passed HSK Level 4 or above can apply for major study directly, and those who have passed the HSK Level 3 can apply to take Chinese language courses for one year first, then move on to the major study after meeting the requirement;

have acquired the Chinese proficiency of HSK Level 4 when applying for master’s or doctoral programs; Applicants who have passed HSK Level 5 or above can apply for major study directly, and those who have passed the HSK Level 4 can apply to take Chinese language courses for one year first, then move on to the major study after meeting the requirement;

Those who have used Chinese as the language of instruction to obtain a degree in a Chinese university are not required to provide proof of the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK), but must provide a proof of the Chinese language of instruction;

● Applying for English-taught programs

provide a report of English Language Test when applying for English-taught programs (TOEFL 80+/IELTS 6.0+). Those who cannot offer the above-mentioned standard English test result can provide a proof of their previous studying at an institution where the teaching language is English, and will be required to take additional oral or written English test organized by Wuhan University. Native English-speaking applicants could be exempted from providing the above English proficiency certificate;

Applicants for English-taught master’s program of clinical medicine, in addition to providing a proof of English proficiency, should have passed HSK (Level 4)or above as well. Those who have passed HSK(Level 3)can apply to take Chinese language training courses for one year, and then move on to their degree study after meeting the requirement;

6. Admission documents. When applying for a postgraduate program or for academic education as a general or senior scholar, an applicant shall provide the admission documents issued by the university of preference, including an admission letter, a pre-admission letter, or the invitation letter from a prospect supervisor (admission documents will serve as a priority of admission in granting the Chinese Government Scholarship), please submit online the pre-admission notice if you have obtained it from Wuhan University;

7. A study or research plan written in Chinese or in English (no less than 200 words/characters for undergraduates; no less than 500 words/characters for scholars; no less than 1000 words/characters for postgraduates);

8.  Recommendation letters. An applicant for a postgraduate program or for academic education as a senior scholar shall submit two recommendation letters in Chinese or in English from professors or associate professors;

9. An applicant for the arts or design program shall provide his/her own works (such as videos and paintings);

10. An applicant under the age of 18 shall submit the legal documents of his/her legal guardian(s) in China;

11. An applicant to study in China for more than six months shall submit a photocopy of the Foreigner Physical Examination Form (the original document, printed by Chinese quarantine authorities, shall be filled in in English and kept by the applicant). The medical examinations must cover all the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete records or those without the signature of the attending physician, the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are invalid. Medical examination results are valid for only six months, the Form can be downloaded from http://admission.whu.edu.cn/en/?c=content&a=list&catid=81 ;

12. Non-criminal record report in English or Chinese. An applicant shall submit a valid Certificate of Non-Criminal Record (or Police Clearance Certificate) issued by the local public security (such as the police station), usually issued within six months prior to the submission date of the application.

Reminder: All uploaded supporting documents must be clear, authentic and valid. Applicants are recommended to use professional device to scan the relevant documents. Applicants shall bear the consequences caused by unclear or unidentifiable uploaded materials.
