2025-2026 Academic Year Wuhan University "China Studies Program" Ph.D. Fellowships Application Guide

What is this program?

The "China Studies Program" Ph.D. Fellowships is established by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC), dedicated to providing overseas young scholars researching China with opportunities and support for doctoral studies in China. This includes both the Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship and the Ph.D. in China Fellowship. We welcome eligible young scholars to apply.

Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship: Funds outstanding doctoral students registered at foreign universities to study in Wuhan University, conduct joint research, and write their doctoral dissertations. Generally, this lasts from one semester to two academic years.

Ph.D. in China Fellowship: Funds outstanding foreign master graduates to pursue a doctoral degree (usually 4 years) in Wuhan University.


What can program students receive?

Scholarship: tuition, living expenses, international round-trip ticket, insurance and priority access to research funding opportunities.

Academic Resources: Access to top academic training; participation in tailored forums, seminars, workshops, and other academic activities, with professional guidance from outstanding tutors from Chinese and foreign universities, and in-depth exchange and interaction with scholars from China and abroad.

Future Development: Priority access to other "China Studies Program" projects after graduation, such as doctoral dissertation and translation publications, training in China, and participation in international academic conferences.


What are the application requirements?

Aspirants who are engaged in research related to China in the fields of humanities and social sciences, have a solid academic foundation, have a clear research topic or goal, and can conduct research in Chinese:

Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship:

  • Non-Chinese citizens;

  • HSK Level 3 or above, with priority given to those with excellent Chinese proficiency under the same conditions;

  • Officially registered doctoral students at foreign universities.

Ph.D. in China Fellowship:

  • Non-Chinese citizens;

  • Holders of a master's degree or graduating master's students;

  • HSK Level 5 or above, with priority given to those with excellent Chinese proficiency under the same conditions.


How to apply?

From now until February 28, 2025, applicants can log in to the "China Studies Program" Ph.D. system at http://www.chinese.cn/page/#/pcpage/csp to complete the online application. Applicants can check the list of Wuhan University supervisors in the system. At the same time, applicants must also log in to the Wuhan University application system at http://admission.whu.edu.cn to submit application materials online.


What application materials are needed?

Joint Research Ph.D. Fellowship:

  • Abstract of master's thesis or other research results;

  • Proof of doctoral enrollment;

  • Abstract of doctoral dissertation (if available);

  • Research plan during the stay in China;

  • Two letters of recommendation from experts in the field;

  • Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) score report;

  • Scanned copy of passport photo page;

  • Non-criminal record certificate;

  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form;

  • Acceptance letter from Wuhan University tutor (if available).

Ph.D. in China Fellowship:

  • Notarized transcripts and degree certificates from undergraduate and master's studies (students to-graduate should provide proof documents), along with Chinese translations;

  • Doctoral research plan;

  • Two letters of recommendation from experts in the field;

  • Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) score report;

  • Abstract of master's thesis and other research results;

  • Scanned copy of passport photo page;

  • Non-criminal record certificate;

  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form;

  • Acceptance letter from Wuhan University professor (if available).

Note: Application materials must be in Chinese or English, and translated documents must be notarized. The non-criminal record certificate must be issued by the applicant's local public security authority. The non-criminal record certificate and physical examination report are valid for 6 months. The "Foreigner Physical Examination Form" and the template for the acceptance letter from Wuhan University supervisors can be found on the official website of Wuhan University's School of International Education at https://sie.whu.edu.cn/ download center.


What is the review process?

  • Reviewed by Wuhan university;

  • Reviewed by experts in the field;

  • Online interview organized by CLEC.
